With more than 50 years in medicine, Dr Scott Blackwell brings a depth of clinical experience and professional leadership that is rarely matched in general practice. A Western Australian native, Scott completed his medical degree at the University of Western Australia, graduating in 1968. His career began at Scarborough Beach Medical Centre, where he practised as a GP for over 35 years with a focus on obstetrics, anaesthetics, and — in later years — aged and palliative care. Driven by a commitment to improving care for older Australians, Scott co-founded Collaborative Primary Health Care WA (CPHCWA) in 2011, and alongside co-owner Shannon Tassell, took on the leadership of Joondanna Medical Centre in 2019. Scott has served at the highest levels of the Australian medical profession, holding positions including President of AMAWA, President of Palliative Care WA and Palliative Care Australia, and Chair of the Medical Council and the Clinical Senate of WA. He was also a member of the working party that contributed to the Voluntary Assisted Dying legislation in 2019. Away from medicine, Scott is an avid hockey player who competes in Masters competitions at the local, interstate and international level, and is a strong advocate for physical fitness as central to lifelong health.
